In
1928, Campbell Mercantile was founded in Rush Center, Kansas.
Grandmother Fern Campbell was the proprietor. JD Campbell and uncle
Bob helped run the store. In 1945, grandmother Fern passed away from
hip cancer. Uncle Bob continued to run the store until he sold it
and moved to Mesa, Arizona with his wife. He passed away in 2005.
After
graduating from college, JD Campbell joined the U.S. Army. In 1956,
he moved to Phoenix, Arizona. He sold insurance and obtained his
Real Estate Brokers license. He continued to sell improved building
lots. After many years operating from a distant office, he felt the
need for an office and a retail store in Peoria, Arizona. In 1965,
he founded Sunrise Water Company which he continues to run the
company today.
In
1984, the original Campbell Mercantile in Kansas was torn down and
bricks from the original store were shipped to Arizona to be used to
create the front walk-way along the 60 foot porch area for the new
store. On May 10, 1985, Campbell Mercantile in Peoria, Arizona
opened and has since become a landmark destination point and a great
place to relax, sit on the porch and enjoy the weather.
"Campbell's", as it is often called by our loyal patrons, has that
country ambiance atmosphere. It is a place where the locals meet,
pick up snacks and gas up their boats on the way to Lake Pleasant,
enjoy a good cup of coffee, eat the "Best Burger in the West" or
enjoy fresh ice cream cone on the porch. Beer and wine are served
inside. Seating is available both inside and outside the store with
relaxing atmosphere. We currently employ 25+ friendly employees and
continue to serve the community the 'Old Fashion Way'.
If you happen to be in the neighborhood, please stop by and
experience that Old Country feeling.
